FED:Malaysia deal not new Pacific Solution: PM

CANBERRA, Aug 23 AAP - Prime Minister Julia Gillard says Labor's asylum-seeker deals
with Malaysia and Papua New Guinea are not the same as John Howard's Pacific Solution.

Former prime minister Mr Howard reached agreements with Nauru and PNG to process asylum
seekers offshore and stop people-smuggling.

Ms Gillard in 2007 joined refugee and human rights advocates in criticising the so-called
Pacific Solution as inhumane, and vowed to shut down the Nauru and PNG Manus Island facilities.

But the Gillard government has now reached an agreement with the PNG government to
restart processing on Manus Island.

A High Court challenge against the Gillard government's Malaysian deal continues in
Canberra on Tuesday.

Ms Gillard said her government's approach to asylum-seeker processing was markedly
different to Mr Howard's approach.

"That was strictly a model that Australia engaged in as a one-out decision under a
great deal of pressure with the Tampa (freighter which rescued 438 Afghans in 2001),"

she told ABC Radio on Tuesday.

Instead the present government had worked regionally within the Bali framework.

"We will have a bilateral arrangement with PNG now, but we will stay engaged with the
region on the question of a regional assessment centre," Ms Gillard said.

"So we've taken a regional approach because we've always understood this is an issue
for our whole region."

QLD:Qld toll rises with death of unborn child

By Darren Cartwright and Chris Hutton

BRISBANE, April 26 AAP - Wet weather is hampering Queenslanders returning from a five-day
break in which the state took the unwelcome honour of having the highest road toll in
Australia.

Six people were killed with police confirming on Tuesday that an unborn child was the
latest victim.

The death occurred after a utility and three cars collided on the Bruce Highway near
Tiaro, south of Maryborough, about 2.20pm (AEST) on Monday.

The child's mother, 23 weeks' pregnant, was travelling on one of the cars.

Police say an unborn child is included in the road toll if the mother is more than
20 weeks' pregnant.

The 33-year-old mother is recovering in the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, while
a young boy who was travelling with her is in a serious but stable condition in the Mater
Children's Hospital.

A 38-year-old woman in the ute also died in the crash.

Acting Superintendent Craig Hanlon said he was unsure of the cause of any of the weekend's
fatal accidents.

In contrast with the high death count, police caught fewer drivers for speeding and
drink-driving this year than in the 2010 Easter period, he said.

"It (the death toll) is significant," Mr Conlon said.

"This year we've had six (deaths) and last year we had two, so it is concerning for police.

"We told everyone we'd be out there on the road in force, and we are out there in force
and it's tragic to see six lives lost.

"We've detected in excess of 14,500 people speeding, and I think that's down by about
800 or so from last year.

"We've taken in excess of of 91,500 breath tests and detected 427, and that's less
than last year."

Police impounded 85 vehicles during their Easter road safety campaign and there were
13 people caught driving under the influence of drugs compared to seven last year.

(EDS: AAP's long weekend road toll figures are for the period 0001 April 21 to 2359
April 26. The official police Easter road toll ends at 2359 Monday April 25 and does not
include the extra public holiday on Tuesday for Anzac Day.)

NSW:Woman guilty of passport fraud

SYDNEY, Aug 27 AAP - A Sydney woman has been found guilty over her role in an alleged
fake passport scheme.

Australia Post shop worker Lara Triglia, 36, of Fairfield, on Friday was found guilty
of making a false or misleading statement as part of an Australian passport application.

A jury of seven men and five women returned the verdict to Sydney's Downing Centre
District Court, where Judge Peter Berman set down the matter for sentencing on October
8.

Police allege that at the time of Triglia's arrest in May 2009, she and another woman
were involved in a scam to create fake passports with the intention of bringing illegal
immigrants to Australia.

As an interviewing officer, Triglia was required to meet passport applicants and check
that photographs and documents matched, and to sign associated documents.

Vic: One of ultralight dead was building hangars

MELBOURNE, Dec 7 AAP - One of the men killed in an ultralight crash overnight near
Yarrawonga, on the Murray River, had been building hangars at the local airport.

A spokeswoman for the airport said the man, believed to be from Orange in central western
NSW, was staying at the airport while he was working there.

He and his brother, both aged in their late 50s, were killed after their machine crashed
at Burramine, about six kilometres west of Yarrawonga, on Sunday night.

The aircraft was found at 8.45am (AEDT) on Monday.

Chief flying instructor at the Orange Ultraflight Centre, Ken Pidcock, defended the
safety of the aircraft saying it was a very sophisticated machine.

The aircraft is administered by Recreation Aviation Australia, which operates under
the auspices of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

Mr Pidcock says ultralights can be bought in kit form but they are inspected by authorities
in the course of construction.

"It is the fastest growing sector of aviation and training is almost identical to general
aviation," Mr Pidcock told AAP.

"They are not unlike a Cessna 150 and are equipped with modern implementation."

NSW: Pilot had zero chance of survival, police say

SYDNEY, April 10 AAP - The pilot of a plane missing off the coast of southern Sydney
had "zero" chance of survival, police say.

The 43-year-old Sydney man was at the controls of the twin-engine Metroliner when it
went down in the sea late last night.

The Metroliner, a 19-seat aircraft when used as a passenger plane, was on a mail run
for Airtex Aviation.

Inspector Glenn Finniss of the Marine Area Command said the plane hit the water at high speed.

"The wreckage that's been recovered thus far would indicate a high speed impact into
the water and the survivability of that was very, very minimal," he told reporters today.

"Because of the search ... we did last night and this morning, the chances of survival are zero."

The search for the pilot would be called off at nightfall, he said.

The pilot reported problems to air traffic control a short time after taking off from
Sydney airport at 11.30pm (AEST) yesterday.

The plane dropped off the radar moments later.

NT: Cannabis stopped on way to festival by joint operation

BY Tara Ravens

DARWIN, April 24 AAP - Roadblocks and raids by police have seized more than 80 grams
of cannabis they say was bound for a country music festival in Western Australia.

The operation was mounted by the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk (SAID), which is
focused on the illegal trafficking of petrol, drugs and alcohol in the outback, and which
aims to reduce drug-fuelled crime in remote communities.

The SAID operation aimed to stop drugs getting to a Tamworth on Tour country music
festival at Warburton, about 1,540 kilometres northeast of Perth, on April 16 and 17,
police said.

Officers and the NT Dog Operations Unit set up a roadblock 20km from Wingelina in Western
Australia to stop illicit substances reaching the event, 220kms to the west.

Officer in charge of the NT SAID, Beau McNeill, said 35 vehicles were searched, netting
six grams of cannabis that lead to a house search at Wingelina.

The raid procured 60 grams of cannabis while another 15 grams divided into deal bags
was located at another residence.

Serg McNeill said two men, aged 34 and 22, were arrested and charged with possession
and supply of cannabis.

"It is understood that the bulk of this cannabis was believed to have been destined
for the country music festival in Warburton," he said.

"As a result of targeted operations the festival was held without incident."

Indon Bashir (SYDNEY/JAKARTA)

The former president of the Coogee Beach Dolphins rugby league team has criticised
Indonesia's decision to overturn Muslim cleric ABU BAKAR BASHIR'S conspiracy conviction.

ALBERT TALARICO says he finds the decision unbelievable.

The Indonesian Supreme Court has ruled BASHIR didn't give his blessing to the October
2002 bomb attack .. overturning his conviction on conspiracy charges.

Mr TALARICO says the court's ruling is all the more devastating for the victims' families
.. because it's been delivered three days before Christmas.

And DAVID "SPIKE" STEWART .. who lost his 29-year-old son ANTHONY in the 2002 bombings
.. says the ruling is difficult to comprehend.

Mr STEWART says the whole world knows BASHIR is guilty except Indonesia .. and the
damage he's done is incomprehensible.

But BASHIR says the court ruling .. clearing him of any part in the bombings .. is
a blow to the West .. and serves as a warning that Western attempts to subjugate Indonesia

Dutch pension settles with Time WarnerMOVERSMARKETPLACE by Bloomberg

International Herald Tribune
04-10-2006
Stichting Pensioenfonds ABP, Europe's biggest pension fund, said it received a settlement of $20 million from Time Warner relating to the media company's 2001 merger with America Online. The pension fund sued Time Warner, based in New York, for $150 million in damages after Time Warner and AOL together restated two years of results and cut revenue by $190 million in 2002. The settlement also will cover legal costs related to the suit, ABP, based in Heerlen, the Netherlands, said in a statement Saturday. The settlement ends ABP's action against Time Warner, the pension fund said. Time Warner, the world's largest media company, on Friday won final approval for a plan to pay $2.55 billion to other shareholders to settle a class-action lawsuit over the America Online merger. Plaintiffs in the class-action suit claimed AOL misrepresented financial results before agreeing to buy Time Warner at the height of the Internet boom, in the largest acquisition ever. The suit accused AOL of improperly accounting for dozens of advertising deals, inflating revenue for 15 quarters from 1998 to 2002. ABP decided to opt out of the class-action lawsuit and sue Time Warner independently. Rene Maatman, chief counsel at ABP, was quoted Saturday in Het Financieele Dagblad as saying ABP would have received only $1 million to $3 million if it had participated in the larger suit.

BindView Announces First Products to Secure and Manage Web Services; Market Leader Continues to Set the Standard for Comprehensive Security Solutions.

Business Editors/High Tech Writers

MEC 2002

HOUSTON & ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 9, 2002

BindView Corporation (NASDAQ:BVEW):

- Expands bv-control and bv-admin to Address Challenges of

Microsoft .NET Web Services

BindView Corporation (NASDAQ:BVEW), a leading provider of IT security management solutions, announced today the launch of its first products for Microsoft XML .NET Web services.

With bv-Control for Web Services(R) and bv-Admin for Microsoft .NET Web Services(R) Web administrators now have an effective way to help secure and manage Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS), as well as Microsoft .NET Web Services. These new offerings are the latest additions to BindView's award-winning bv-Control and bv-Admin product lines, which help secure, automate and lower the costs of maintaining and managing IT infrastructures.

Web services greatly enhances an organization's ability to communicate and collaborate, however this interoperability exposes internal networks to access from the outside world. The bv-Control for Web Services solution helps secure not only Web servers but also the new infrastructure for delivering Web services applications. The bv-Control for Web Services solution also offers automated configuration management and protects Web servers from the inside by helping organizations assess, audit and secure their networks against known vulnerabilities, configuration errors and rogue servers. Additionally, the product helps Web administrators to easily identify unauthorized changes to shared Web files, virtual directories and Web content - all while keeping pace with the latest Microsoft security bulletins.

Working in conjunction with bv-Control for Web Services, BindView's bv-Admin for Microsoft .NET Web Services product provides comprehensive role-based access control, one of the most effective means for developing and enforcing security policies over Web services. Unlike other delegation solutions, bv-Admin for Microsoft .NET Web Services is completely integrated with Microsoft .NET - it does not require additional agents, servers or the introduction of another abstraction layer to existing Microsoft .NET Web servers. Using the bv-Admin for Microsoft .NET Web Services solution, administrators can define who has access to individual Web services based on assigned user roles, thus preventing unauthorized access to applications delivered as Web services. BindView's Web services solution helps organizations save both time and money by creating a "portal" Web application that is both intuitive and comprehensive. This portal enables IT administrators to access a centralized view of network configurations and automate once-tedious system management processes.

Key features of bv-Control for Web Services include:

 - Analysis of virtual directories, files, shares and permissions - Protection for the Web from the inside - Protection for the Web from malicious outsiders - Role-based access control for Microsoft .NET Web Services - Delegation to both users and administrators - Integration with Microsoft. NET- and Active Directory-enabled applications

"The move toward Web services marks a substantial shift in the way organizations do business, share information and manage their IT networks," said Ray Wagner, Research Director, Information Security Strategies, Gartner Inc. "Only the most secure and efficient Web services applications will yield the return on investment that Web services can deliver. To most effectively harness the power of Web services, organizations will need to employ technologies and processes that address the unique security challenges posed by this new computing environment."

Washington State GOP Streamlines Voting Process With iPolitics.com's Elect.Net Voting Software at State Convention.

BELLEVUE, Wash., July 25 /PRNewswire/ --

More than 1,200 Washington State Republican Party members experienced the future of voting, using iPolitics.com's proprietary Elect.Net online voting software. The Washington State Republican Party successfully elected delegates to the Republican National Convention at their recent State Convention held in Spokane, Washington. The GOP elected to use iPolitics.com's secure online voting software to avoid delays associated with conventional voting procedures, such as challenges to the validity of votes and recounts. In addition, iPolitics.com's Elect.Net software calculates results immediately, and that offered the Convention its election results in a fraction of the time expected with traditional voting methods.

The iPolitics.com team provided technical service to nine congressional Districts in three separate locations during the first round of voting. Voting stations were then set up in one central location for the next round of voting as the entire group convened to elect 10 at-large delegates and 10 alternates to the National Convention. "We're very pleased with the success of the election," comments iPolitics.com Executive Vice President and CTO Alexis Nepomuceno. "We believe that this is only one of many such instances in which secure online voting becomes an easy (and tamper-proof) alternative to more traditional paper elections -- and with an almost instantaneous tabulation of results."

The voting software from Elect.Net (a division of iPolitics.com) is a proprietary program that allows for safe and secure voting online -- and it requires no special software add-ons or downloads, just a web-enabled computer and browser. The ultimate goal of the implementation of online voting is to increase the ease of voting, and to open access to a greater number of eligible voters -- whether that vote is for public office, a labor union election or shareholder voting.

I have suffered from a psychological disease so when I drank a lot I had a panic attack."According to court records, on July 9 the defendant was on Emirates flight EK20 from Manchester to Dubai.According to witnesses, as the plane prepared to land he made his bomb threat."A female passenger came to me shaking and scared and told me that he had told her there was a bomb on the plane that would explode within seven minutes," a Lebanese air stewardess said. "I went to him and found him holding two mobile phones. He was pushing the buttons and saying the bomb would explode."When she told him he was scaring the other passengers, the defendant is alleged to have said he was only joking. An Emirates official said at the time: "The captain immediately alerted the department of Civil Aviation who took charge of the situation. Police evacuated all the passengers and searched the plane but found nothing."An eyewitness added: "Baggage was thoroughly checked and there were a lot of airport security and the police were guarding the place."Salim Mohammad Al Qaidi, the senior public prosecutor, said the defendant had tested positive for two different types of drugs and banned substances, although he is not facing any charges relating to this. The suspect asked for the case to be delayed so he could produce medical records to back up his claims but the judge refused and a verdict will be issued later this month. Synopsys Adds New Controller.

Synopsys, a world provider of software and IP for semiconductor design and manufacturing, announced the addition of the DesignWare SuperSpeed USB xHCI Host Controller to the complete DesignWare SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.0) IP solution consisting of device and host controllers, PHY and verification IP.

The complete solution also includes a SuperSpeed USB virtual platform and drivers to aid software development. The SuperSpeed USB xHCI Host Controller supports the current Extensible Host Controller Interface (xHCI) draft specification, which offers a standardized method for communication between USB 3.0 host controllers and the USB 3.0 software stack.

The DesignWare SuperSpeed USB xHCI Host Controller, operating at 5 Gbps, is targeted at high performance netbooks, set-top boxes, digital video recorders, digital TVs, and mobile internet devices that want to take advantage of SuperSpeed USB's 10x increase in throughput. To help ensure interoperability with multiple operating systems, standard off-the-shelf USB 3.0 xHCI software stack drivers can be used with the DesignWare SuperSpeed USB xHCI Host Controller, allowing designers to focus on developing differentiated features and spend less effort on software development. Additionally, the DesignWare SuperSpeed USB xHCI Host Controller can be configured to support multiple ports, enabling designers to implement their required configuration without having to manually modify their existing source code.

"Synopsys is an active member of the USB Implementer Forum, and we commend their continued contribution to the advancement of the SuperSpeed USB ecosystem," said Jeff Ravencraft, president and chairman, USB Implementers Forum. "The addition of the xHCI Host Controller to the DesignWare SuperSpeed USB IP offering will enable Synopsys customers to quickly deploy SuperSpeed USB products to the design community."

The company said that the DesignWare SuperSpeed USB xHCI Host Controller is optimized for low power consumption to extend product battery life, implementing dual power rails to allow nearly the entire core to be completely turned off while in suspend mode. The controller's low power design information is provided in the industry standard Unified Power Format (UPF), enabling designers to use the Synopsys' Eclypse Low Power Solution to automatically implement aggressive power management schemes for dynamic and leakage power.

"As a leading provider of USB IP for nearly a decade, Synopsys continues to develop high quality IP that helps designers lower the risk and cost of implementing the latest USB 3.0 connectivity into their system-on-chip designs," said John Koeter, vice president of marketing for the Solutions Group at Synopsys. "With the addition of the xHCI Host Controller to our DesignWare SuperSpeed USB IP offering, designers can turn to a single, trusted vendor for an integrated USB 3.0 IP solution for their design needs."
