Fed: More Aussie troops for Afghanistan

CANBERRA, April 29 AAP - Australia will deploy more than 200 extra troops to Afghanistan,
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has announced.

Australia presently has some 1,100 troops in the war-torn nation, most operating in
the dangerous Oruzgan province in the country's south-central region.

"There will be no additional combat units," Mr Rudd said during a news conference in
Canberra on Wednesday, adding the extra troops would be used for training.

Security in Afghanistan was deteriorating, he said.

Australia also had an enduring obligation to the United States under the ANZUS Treaty, he said.
